Campaigns officer interview: Sarah Wynn

April 11, 2008

In the last of our series of election candidate interviews, Ben Hobson caught up with journalism and english literature student, Sarah Wynn to find out why she’s running for Campaigns officer.

Why do you want to stand for the position?

Campaigns Officer is obviously a mix of welfare and the Equal op’s, I stand fully for both of them and even when it hadn’t been merged I was still thinking of running for them. I just want to make a difference about discrimination or things that hold students back within the SU. Read the rest of this entry »

April 11, 2008

Events management student Meg Anderson is going for campaigns officer, and with the experience she’s gained for her degree she thinks she’s got what it takes to make the SU a strong and active campaign organisation, Laura Wood spoke to her.

Why do you want to stand for the position?

I’ve always felt that as a student at UCLan at some point I want to give something back. Given the course I do and putting on events for the community I wanted to get more involved with the SU and make a difference to the people around me. Read the rest of this entry »

Campaigns officer interview: Lee Bradshaw

April 11, 2008

Current part-time officer Lee Bradshaw spoke to Laura Wood about why he’s running for the newly created Campaigns officer.

Why do you want to stand for the position?

I’ve been actively involved with the Union for the past two years both on the students’ council and as a part-time executive and I just think I could do so much more with a full-time position. There’s so many things I’ve been involved with this year and I think I could do so much more if I was working full-time. It’s so frustrating sometimes when I’ve wanted to give so much more and I can’t commit because of my course and I want to be able to grow and develop from what I’ve done the past few years. Campaigns officer interview: David Watters

April 11, 2008

Four candidates, one job, UCLan students will decide. Nafisa Sayani speaks to journalism and politics student, David Watters, about his position on top-up fees, what he plans to campaign on and why he’s the best person for the job.

Why did you decide to stand for this position?

Ever since I got here on Flying Start, I’ve really enjoyed the whole university experience, and it is a bit of a cliché, but I do want to give something back. I’ve had such a good experience, I want to make sure that people coming here have the same enjoyable experience. I think my personality quite fits the whole campaign – I’m quite open and I’d like to think I’m approachable. It’s just something that really interests me. I think it’s something I can definitely get my teeth into and I’ll really enjoy it. Read the rest of this entry »

Why do you want to stand for the position?

To change the Union I guess is the broadest answer. I’ve been around volunteering for several different roles for the past four and a half years and yeah it would be nice to actually get in because it is a full time position. Read the rest of this entry »

Black students rep: Mitchell Powell

April 9, 2008

Student Council positions have not proved popular at this election, only one candidate went in for any of the positions. Laura Wood caught up with Mitchell Powell about why he’s standing for Black students representative.

Why do you want to stand for the position?

There’s a massive invisible ethnic group in Preston and a lot of those students come to UCLan. They’re underrepresented in the Union at the moment and I want to fill that void. Read the rest of this entry »

Education officer interview: Sarah Delli-Colli

April 9, 2008

Being the only candidate in an election is what most people would wish for, but it can be harder than it looks. Sarah Delli-Colli spoke to Ben Hobson.

Why do you want the job?

I’ve been heavily involved in lots of education things, my third year as course rep and I have always been an active course rep and I have done more than just going to the standard meetings. I’m faculty rep and I sit on the student council. I really do care about the education of students, especially as my course is quite new, the course is only in its fourth year. So I see that some of the newer courses need more attention.  For example I want to get into library loans, done online. Because the course has to do a lot of into library loans, and it is very time consuming doing at the library. So yeah I want to continue training all the reps to a high standard. Being a course rep I notice a lot of meetings often there is half the course reps there that should be there, so I want to try and do something about that. It is a really important part of the uni. April 8, 2008

Sports studies student Adam Slaughter is first up in our interviews with the candidates running to be Activities and Participation officer. Interview by Dejla Kadhim.

Why do you want to stand for the position?

Well, I’ve been in sport all my life and activities of all things, so I’ve seen students get involved in lots of different activities, but I’ve also seen people not get involved and I think there’s a definite area of students that we can target and try to get them involved in the activities that the university has to offer and hopefully create some more innovative, new events that people can get involved in.
