Following on from the interview with Dean Barker, graphic design student Andy Squire is asked about his plans if he were to become Media officer (interview by Dejla Kadhim).
Why do you want to stand for the position?
Having spent many hours volunteering for Pluto and Frequency, I would like the opportunity to not only keep the media as strong as it is, but to expand and progress it too.
Why should people vote for you?
I know where best to spend the budget, and how to support and motivate the volunteers.
How do you plan to improve the position?
By developing the facilities and output we currently have in place, while starting new work to make the media more personal.
What relevant skills and experience have you had?
I worked with Pluto and PR1 first in 2005, and then in 2007 I took up the position of Graphics Editor. I have contributed heavily this year and helped each issue grow from the ground up.
How do you think your campaign will be different to other candidates?
My campaign is built on realistic expectations for the next year, based on knowledge and experience specific to UCLan SU’s media.
How would you improve Pluto, Frequency and Pluto Online?
By increasing variety. There would be a wider spectrum of genres of music covered, more films reviewed, and so on. More variety for the students at UCLan.
How do you think you’ll cope with the responsibility and pressure of the position?
This will not be the first job I’ve had that involves responsibility and pressure. In the past, I have had no problem dealing with it at all, and I wouldn’t expect to have any trouble in this position either.
What changes, if any, would you like to make to the process of creating Pluto, Frequency and Pluto Online?
I would increase staff, and improve the facilities available to them. This would result in a lower workload and more support for each member of the team.
Which one would you promote the most?
Each would be promoted equally. Pluto-online wouldn’t be separate, but an extension of Pluto. I know that volunteers put a lot of their own time into their chosen media, so it would be unfair to promote one over the other.
